In spread form, yes — and early introduction (from 6 months) actually helps prevent peanut allergy. Whole peanuts and thick straight-from-the-jar spoonfuls are a hard no at every age here.

Why

Peanuts play two opposite roles. As an allergen, introducing peanut early in safe forms is now standard prevention guidance — waiting increases risk. As a choking hazard, whole peanuts are small, hard, round and exactly airway-shaped, and a sticky blob of thick peanut butter can also seal an airway. Both facts are true at once, and both matter.

How to serve it safely

Thin peanut butter with water, breast milk or formula until it drips easily off a spoon, stir it into oatmeal, yogurt or purees, or use powdered peanut butter. Never offer whole peanuts to babies or toddlers, and never let a baby scoop straight from the jar.

Warning signs to watch for

Peanut reactions can be fast and can be severe: hives, swelling of lips or eyes, vomiting, and in serious cases breathing difficulty or drowsiness. Babies with severe eczema or a known egg allergy are higher-risk and benefit from pediatrician-guided introduction.

When to call for help

For any breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips and face, or repeated vomiting after peanut, seek emergency care immediately (911 in the US). For milder reactions, contact your pediatrician before re-exposure. Babies with severe eczema: ask your pediatrician about allergy testing before first introduction. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.

Common questions

Why would I give my baby peanuts so early? Isn’t that risky?

Landmark research found that babies at high risk for peanut allergy who were introduced to peanut early (in safe forms) had far less peanut allergy — not more. Early, regular exposure is now official guidance in the US and UK.

Can my baby have a taste of peanut butter off the spoon?

Only if it is thinned until it drips. A thick knob of peanut butter behaves like a plug if it slides down the wrong way — that is a choking risk independent of allergy.

What about puffs and snacks labeled with peanut?

Dissolvable peanut puffs are designed for beginner eaters and are one of the easiest early-introduction formats. Check the label — some are sweetened or salted.
