No added salt in baby food before 12 months — babies’ kidneys cannot handle it and their palates do not need it. After the first birthday, ordinary family cooking (lightly salted) is fine.

Why

Babies’ kidneys are still maturing and cannot excrete sodium as efficiently as adults, and breast milk, formula and natural foods already supply all the sodium they need. Added salt also trains a preference for saltiness early. This is why stock cubes, gravy, takeout and adult table food are flagged before the first birthday — the salt hides in them.

How to serve it safely

Cook baby portions without salt and season with herbs, spices, lemon, garlic and unsalted stocks instead. Read labels on breads, cheeses and processed snacks — salt hides there. From 12 months, mildly salted family food is fine; keep heavy salting off the toddler plate as a habit, not a hard rule.

Warning signs to watch for

Acute salt poisoning in babies is rare and comes from accidents (salt substitutes, seawater, formula made incorrectly) — signs include unusual thirst, vomiting, drowsiness and, in severe cases, seizures.

When to call for help

If your baby has swallowed a large amount of salt, salt substitute or very salty water, or seems unusually drowsy and thirsty after such an accident, seek medical help immediately. US Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.

Common questions

Does this mean I can never salt the family dinner?

No — just salt after removing the baby’s portion, or salt at the table. Cooking the whole meal unsalted for everyone is also a fine family habit, but the baby’s plate is the one that matters before 12 months.

Is sea salt or pink salt better for babies?

None of them. For babies, all salt is just sodium — fancy varieties carry no advantage and the limit applies identically.

What about soy sauce, stock cubes and gravy?

All high-sodium and all off the menu before 12 months. Low-sodium versions still count — use herbs and spices for flavor in baby’s portion instead.
